American Airlines publishes a customer service plan that spells out what it will do when a disruption is its fault. In the US the main legal right is a refund, not cash compensation; EU, UK and Canadian rules can add fixed compensation on flights they cover.

Short answer

A delayed American flight doesn't automatically bring cash compensation. If American cancels or significantly changes your flight, you can refund the unused ticket, and American commits to rebooking, and on request meals and hotels, when the disruption is within its control. EU261, UK261 or Canada's APPR may add fixed compensation on flights they cover.

Does your American flight qualify?

  1. Find your flight details. Note the airline, flight number, date, booking reference, and your scheduled and actual arrival times (from your boarding pass, email confirmation or the airline app).
  2. Measure the delay at arrival. EU261, UK261 and Canada's rules count the delay at your final destination, not departure. Under US DOT rules, a refund is triggered by a change or delay of 3+ hours (domestic) or 6+ hours (international).
  3. Work out which rules cover the flight. Look at where it departed and landed and who operated it: a departure from an EU or UK airport brings EU261 or UK261, flights touching Canada fall under APPR, and flights to, from or within the US fall under the US DOT rules.
  4. Find the cause. Compensation regimes generally exclude extraordinary circumstances such as severe weather, air traffic control restrictions or security risks. Ordinary technical faults are treated differently in different places, so ask the airline to state the cause in writing.
  5. Check the notice you were given. For cancellations, the amount of notice (for example under 14 days) can decide whether compensation applies.

How to claim from American Airlines

  1. Refund: request it at aa.com/refunds, by phone or by mail; you can check status on American's refund status page. Card refunds are within 7 business days of the request under American's plan.
  2. Meals, hotel and ground transport: ask for vouchers or reimbursement as described in American's customer service plan and keep receipts.
  3. Compensation or complaints: use American's Customer Relations form or mail Customer Relations (P.O. Box 619619, DFW Airport, TX 75261-9616). American acknowledges within 30 days and resolves within 60.
  4. EU departures: American's EU passenger rights page directs claims to Customer Relations. It does not describe a separate UK261 process.
  5. If unresolved: file with the DOT aviation consumer complaint form (US) or the Canadian Transportation Agency (Canada).

EU261 reform: what has changed and what hasn't

Today's rules are still Regulation 261/2004

The EU adopted a regulation amending EU261 in 2026 (Regulation (EU) 2026/2202). According to the Council, it keeps the 3-hour threshold and broadly similar compensation amounts, adds a defined list of extraordinary circumstances and stricter duties on airlines. EUR-Lex shows it entering into force on 22 October 2026, but law-firm commentary says most provisions apply only from October 2027. Until the new rules apply, the current rules above are what govern a claim. The reform does not apply in the UK, where UK261 remains in force. Check the Council announcement and EUR-Lex for the current position.

Travelling? Keep your claim and booking details private

Claim forms and booking pages ask for names, booking references and contact details. Airport and hotel Wi-Fi are shared networks, so avoid filing claims or opening booking emails on them unprotected. A VPN encrypts your traffic between your device and the VPN server, which helps protect it on shared networks; it does not change what compensation you are owed. See how a VPN works.

This page is general information, not legal advice. Whether you are owed compensation depends on your flight, the cause of the disruption, the notice you were given and the rules that apply. Airlines and regulators update their rules; confirm the current terms on the official pages linked here. KeenVPN is not an airline, a claims company or a law firm and does not file claims on your behalf.

Frequently asked questions

Does American Airlines give compensation for a delay?
Not automatically. US law doesn't require cash compensation for ordinary delays. American's plan commits to rebooking and, on request, hotel, ground transport and a meal credit for delays of 3+ hours it controls. EU261, UK261 or APPR may add fixed compensation on flights they cover.
How do I get a refund from American Airlines?
Request one at aa.com/refunds, by phone or by mail. American's plan says card refunds come within 7 business days of the request, and cash or check refunds take up to 20 business days. Tickets bought through agencies are refunded by the agency.
What does American pay for an involuntary bump?
Domestic flights: 200% of the one-way fare up to $1,075 for a 1–2 hour delay, or 400% up to $2,150 for 2+ hours; international flights use 1–4 and 4+ hour bands with the same caps, subject to American's conditions.
Does American cover hotels for weather delays?
American's plan says that for uncontrollable causes such as weather, customers cover their own costs, but you can still request a refund if you decide not to travel.
Who do I contact if American doesn't resolve my claim?
Use American's Customer Relations form first. If unresolved, you can file a complaint with the US DOT, or with Canada's CTA for flights covered by APPR.
