Smart DNS is often lighter than a VPN because it does not encrypt your traffic. That can be useful for a very specific routing need, but it also means it does not provide the same protection on an untrusted network. It is not the right tool if privacy or public-Wi-Fi safety is the main concern.

Always follow local law and the terms of the services you use. A change in how a service identifies your connection does not remove your responsibility to use that service properly.
